In Hawaiian, the gourd, is otherwise described as ipu. Today it is mostly used to produce kani (sound) for mele (song) and hula (dance). It is a double gourd implement made by joining two gourds together. As opposed to making the instrument in the traditional method, this miniature ipu heke craft gives you an opportunity to work with a gourd in a similiar fashion while learning about this unique Hawaiian instrument.
